Chapter 1: Getting Started

Thank you for choosing MagiCure™, the industry-leading PC protection application. This User Guide will help you get familiar with the product. It provides a complete list of all the product’s features, as well as a brief description of each feature. We strongly recommend that you read this User Guide carefully before you set up and begin to explore MagiCure.

Introduction

MagiCure represents a major advancement in technology that has never before been available for protecting computers from virus, user, or system problems. It helps computer users — regardless of their skill levels —easily and quickly fix their computer problems in seconds. It enables both users and enterprise IT support groups to save a tremendous amount of time and money on maintaining their computers.

MagiCure enables you to take a “snapshot” of the entire system and data at a specific time. You can then select a specific snapshot to recover files from, or restore the entire system to. Based on a patent-pending technology, MagiCure requires very little hard disk space to create up to 1,000 snapshots. It uses the smallest amount of disk space to protect the entire system, when compared with any other software of this type.

Key Features

MagiCure lets you quickly and easily perform the following tasks:

  1. Recover deleted and corrupted files
  2. Restore an earlier version of a file
  3. Restore the entire system to a clean state after virus or spyware infections
  4. Restore a crashed system to a working state
  5. Reset a publicly shared system to a clean, preconfigured state after each session
  6. Remove unwanted software installations
  7. Back out of a failed software deployment process
  8. Fix daily user or software problems
  9. Try out software products before actual deployment

Components

It is important that you become familiar with the following MagiCure program components before continuing with this User Guide.

Sub-console

The MagiCure Subconsole is a mini operating system that works under the Windows operating system. It provides system restoration capability if Windows becomes inaccessible. You can access the Subconsole by pressing and holding the Home key during system startup. The Subconsole enables you to restore the system, take a snapshot, delete snapshots, or uninstall MagiCure in emergency situations.

Quick Console

This component is a mini-console version of MagiCure, with only the Restore System and Snapshot functions. You can use this simple component directly; however, you can still access more MagiCure functions, by clicking the Advanced button.

Advanced Console

The Advanced Console gives you easy and quick access to more advanced program features.

Chapter 2: Loading MagiCure

MagiCure provides a variety of setup options, ranging from single-desktop setup to thousands of workstations in a network. Whatever your deployment method requirements are, you will most likely find one that best suits your needs. Be sure to read the System Requirements and the Before Setting up MagiCure sections below before running setup.

System Requirements

To set up MagiCure, your computer must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. IBM PC or 100% compatible computer

Setting up MagiCure

We recommend that you visit the AvantEDGE Solutions Ltd. Web site (http://www.magicuresoft.com) in order to download the lasted setup files.

Double-click the Setup.exe file in the Installation files, and then continue according to the following installation instructions:

  1. Click Setup to launch the MagiCure Install Shield wizard.
  2. Read the End User License Agreement (EULA) carefully, and then click Next.

  1. Setup attempts to detect your user and company name; however, you are free to make changes to them. You must type in your Product ID. You can also choose to install the program for your profile, or for anyone else who uses that computer.

  1. Click Next.
  2. By default, Setup copies the program files to the C:\ Program Files\MagiCure folder; however, you can configure Setup to copy the files to a folder of your choice by clicking Browse.

  1. Click Next.
  2. Setup allows you to install MagiCure on multi-boot systems. Different Operating System users must choose the appropriate setup method according to the state of their computer’s OS. If this computer is not a multi-boot system, select the Single OS option. If this computer is a multi-boot system, you must run this setup separately for each OS. In this case, select the appropriate option.

  1. Click Next.
  2. The Setup Summary window displays the program settings you selected in the previous steps. Review these settings before you click Next. If you want to change any setting, click Back until you reach the relevant page.

  1. Setup copies all the program files, and then prompts you to restart the computer. Make sure the “Yes” option is selected, and then click Finish to restart.

Setup Confirmation

After the computer is restarted, MagiCure setup is completed. Always confirm that the setup process was completed successfully as follows:

  1. Locate and confirm that MagiCure added a new icon to your computer’s system tray by looking for it in the lower right hand corner of the Windows desktop.
  2. Right-click the tray icon and choose MagiCure Advanced or Quick Console on the popup menu. This will display the MagiCure program console.
  3. Browse around the console to familiarize yourself with the program. Under General Settings, click Snapshot settings to confirm that a baseline snapshot was created during setup.
  4. To see MagiCure in action, try the following simple restore:
    1. Delete an icon from the desktop
    2. Open the MagiCure Advanced console.
    3. Under Quick Fixes, click Restore System. There should be only one snapshot, the baseline snapshot.
    4. Select the baseline snapshot and click Next to restore the system to it. MagiCure must restart the computer to complete the restore process.
    5. After system restart, examine the desktop to see if the deleted icon has been restored. If it has, congratulations! You have successfully installed MagiCure on your computer.

We recommend that you use one of the other uninstall methods. This method is only provided for emergency uninstall.

Chapter 3: Fixing Computer Problems

There is nothing like a computer problem to ruin your day. Hours, days, even months, of work can be lost if your computer crashes due to an application fault, user error, or virus attack. Not only that, you may need to put in even more hours of work to restore the computer. With MagiCure, you can easily and quickly fix any computer software problems in seconds.

Restoring the System

The MagiCure Restore System feature enables you to quickly and easily restore the entire system to a snapshot of a previously healthy state. In the process, any corruptions or damages accumulated since that snapshot are discarded.

This section shows you how to restore the system from the Quick Console, Advanced Console, and Subconsole.

Restoring from the Quick Console

  1. Double-click the MagiCure icon in the system tray. You will need a password to access the Quick Console if Access Control is enabled (see Access Control on page 31).
  2. In the Quick Console, click Restore system. The snapshot window opens.
  3. Select the snapshot to which to restore the system.

  1. Click Restore to restart the computer and complete the restore process. After restarting the computer, the system is completely restored.
    1. Right-click the MagiCure icon in the system tray, and select MagiCure Advanced from the popup menu. You will need a password to access the Advanced Console if Access Control is enabled (see Access Control on page 31).

From the Application Console

  1. In the Application Console, under the Quick Fixes task bar, click Restore system. The right-hand panel will display all available snapshots for your computer. The current snapshot is indicated by a large green arrow.
  2. Select the snapshot to which to restore the system.

  1. Click Restart to restart the computer and complete the restore process. After restarting the computer, the system is completely restored. Check to see the differences.

From the Sub console

If you encounter a complete system crash, you will not be able to start the Windows operating system. However, you can still use MagiCure to restore the system.

  1. Restart the computer, holding down the Home key until you see the MagiCure Subconsole screen. You will need to provide a user name and password if Access Control is enabled (see Access Control on page 31).
  2. In the Subconsole, click Restore System. A list of available snapshots is displayed.
  3. Select a snapshot and click Next to continue.

Recovering Files

If you have accidentally deleted a file, or you just want to see a previous version of a file, MagiCure can easily extract the file from another snapshot without restoring the entire system to that snapshot.

  1. Right click the MagiCure icon in the system tray, and select MagiCure Advanced from the popup menu. You will need a user name and password to access the Application Console if Access Control is enabled (see Access Control on page 31).
  2. In the Application Console, under the Quick Fixes task bar, click Recover files. The right-hand panel will display all the available snapshots for your computer. The current snapshot is indicated by a large green arrow.
  3. Select the snapshot you want to recover the files from, and then click Next.

  1. The snapshot is mounted as one or more virtual drives. Click Open Virtual Drive(s) to find the files you want to recover.

  1. You can also explore the virtual drives from My Computer. Copy the files you want to recover to the physical partition. The virtual drives will be deleted automatically when you restart the computer.

Reverting Files to an Earlier Version

If you have made unwanted changes to a file, or if you just want to look at an early version of the document, you can use MagiCure to revert a file to an earlier version.

  1. Right-click the file you want to revert, and choose Recover from the popup menu. You will need a user name and password to revert the file if Access Control is enabled (see Access Control on page 31).

  1. MagiCure provides a list of available snapshots that may contain this file. Select a snapshot to recover the file from the list.

  1. Select whether to save the file to a new location or to overwrite the existing file, and then click Next.

Resetting the Baseline

The very first snapshot created during setup is termed the “baseline.” It is most likely the base configuration of your computer. Over time, you will take new snapshots containing new programs or data; but at the end of the day, you may just want to return the system back to the nice, neat condition from where it all started.

Using the Reset Baseline feature, you can easily return the computer back to its baseline configuration.

  1. Right-click the MagiCure icon in the system tray and select MagiCure Advanced form the popup menu. You will need a user name and password to access the Advanced Console if Access Control is enabled (see Access Control on page 31).
  2. In the Advanced Console, under the Quick Fixes task bar, click Reset Baseline. You must restart the computer to reset the baseline.

Warning: All snapshots that were taken after the baseline snapshot will be permanently deleted after you reset the baseline. We strongly recommend that you backup important data before running Reset Baseline. If you just want to restore the system to the baseline snapshot while keeping all other snapshots, use the Restore System feature instead (see Restoring the System on page 32).

Chapter 4: Updating MagiCure

The “magic” of MagiCure lies within the snapshots. You can repair a crashed system by restoring the system to a healthy snapshot, and recover files by searching and extracting it from an earlier snapshot. You can think of a snapshot as a picture of the system at a specific time. It is therefore very important to take new snapshots, and to take them often. This way, if you ever have to do a system restore, you won’t be set back to weeks or months ago. MagiCure lets you take up to 1,000 snapshots, and you can take a new snapshot in seconds.

Taking a Snapshot

This section shows you how to take a snapshot from the Quick Console, Advanced Console, and Subconsole.

From the Quick Console

  1. Double-click the MagiCure icon in the system tray. You will need a password to access the Quick Console if Access Control is enabled (see Access Control on page 31).
  2. In the Quick Console, click Take Snapshot.
  3. Enter a name and description for the new snapshot.
  4. If you want to protect the snapshot from being deleted, select the Lock the new snapshot to prevent it from deletion option.
  5. Click Next. The new snapshot is created instantly.

From the Advanced Console

To ensure the new snapshot’s integrity, we recommend that you save all files and close all running applications before taking a snapshot of the system.

  1. Right-click the MagiCure icon in the system tray, and select MagiCure Advanced from the popup menu. You will need a user name and password to access the Application Console if Access Control is enabled (see Access Control on page 31).
  1. In the Advanced Console, under the Easy updates task bar, click Take snapshot.
  2. You can enter a name and description for the new snapshot.
  3. If you want to protect the snapshot from being deleted, select the Lock the new snapshot option.
  4. Click Next. The new snapshot is created instantly.

From the Subconsole

If you encounter a complete system crash, you won’t be able to start the Windows operating system. Before you choose to restore system to a previous healthy snapshot in the Subconsole, is a good idea to take a snapshot first. By taking a snapshot of the crashed system, you preserve whatever it is available in that crashed system. After you restore the system to a healthy state, you can search through the snapshot of the crashed system for any possible file recovery.

  1. Restart the computer, holding down the Home key until you see the MagiCure Subconsole screen. You will need to provide a user name and password if Access Control is enabled (see Access Control on page 31).
  2. Click Take snapshot. You are prompted to enter a name and description for the new snapshot.
  3. Enter the appropriate information and click Next to take the new snapshot.

Updating the Baseline

The baseline is the very first snapshot created during setup — it is the foundation of all subsequent snapshots you create. There are times when you may want to update the baseline, especially after upgrading the operating system with a new service pack or some other major changes. MagiCure lets you update the baseline to include the latest system configurations.

Updating the baseline consolidates all the existing snapshots into the new baseline. The entire snapshot history is deleted after running the update baseline procedure.

To update the baseline, perform the following steps:

  1. Right-click the MagiCure icon in the system tray and choose MagiCure Advanced from the popup menu. You will need a user name and password to access the Application Console if Access Control is enabled (see Access Control on page 32).
  2. In the Application Console, under the Easy updates task bar, click Update baseline.
  3. The computer must be restarted in order to create the new baseline. Click Restart to complete the baseline update process.

Chapter 5: Getting More Out of MagiCure

MagiCure is a powerful and flexible tool. You can configure almost every feature to meet your personal or organization’s needs.

Access Control

To prevent other users from restoring your system or recovering your hidden files, you can enable password-protected access control for MagiCure. Access Control user accounts and passwords apply to both the Application Console and the Subconsole. Access Control is disabled by default.

Enabling Access Control

  1. Right-click the MagiCure icon in the system tray and choose MagiCure Advanced from the popup menu.
  2. In the Application Console, under the General Settings task bar, click User settings. The right-hand panel displays the Access Control configuration window.
  3. Select the Enable access control check box, and then click OK.

  1. You are prompted to set a password for the administrator account. Type the password of your choice in both text boxes.
Note: You must remember this password, because you will need it to access the MagiCure program consoles, as well as to uninstall MagiCure.

Creating New Accounts

Enabling Access Control only affects the MagiCure default administrator account. This account has access rights to all program features. However, there may be situations where you will want to give a specific user access to certain parts of the program. For this reason, MagiCure provides a powerful and flexible user-access feature that enables you to create new users and customize their rights accordingly.

To create a new account, perform the following steps:

  1. Right-click the MagiCure icon in the system tray and choose MagiCure Advanced from the popup menu. You will need to logon as administrator to create a new account.
  2. In the Application Console, under the General Settings task bar, click User settings. The right-hand panel displays the Access Control configuration window.
  3. Click Add to create a new account.

  1. In the Add user window, type in the information for your new user. Here you can grant access rights to the new user.
  2. Click OK to create the new user. The new user will be listed in the Access Control window.

When logging in to the Application Console, the new user will only have the access rights to the features you granted. The user will notice some of the features are disabled.

In addition, removing users’ “delete snapshots” rights will also prevent them from locking or unlocking snapshots.

Chapter 6: Getting Help

AvantEDGE technology is committed to providing satisfying support and excellent service to our valued customers. Our goal is to give you professional assistance in using our software through a variety of methods, including documentation, online help, and personal contacts. According to our experience with customers, you can find the answers to most questions on our Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) Web page, or in our various technical white papers. Please look for your questions in the FAQ before using other support options.

FAQ

  • What is MagiCure?

MagiCure is the most advanced computer system and data protection software package ever developed. It enables computer users — regardless of their skill level — to easily and quickly fix their computer problems. It can recover lost, corrupted files, or restore a crashed system to a healthy working state within seconds. MagiCure is the ultimate computer maintenance program that no user should be without.

  • How does MagiCure work?

MagiCure enables you to create a “snapshot” of the entire computer system, including data, at a specific time. You can then select a specific snapshot from which to recover files, or to which to restore the entire system. Both system restoration and the creating a snapshot takes only seconds to complete.

  • What is a snapshot?

Technically speaking, a snapshot is a map of the hard disk sectors and the map’s[AS1] indexing system. Practically speaking, a snapshot is a “picture” of the system and its data at a specific time.

  • How many snapshots can I take with MagiCure?

MagiCure Professional supports up to 1,000 snapshots. This is more than anyone would ever need for system and data management. MagiCure Standard comes with a single, updatable snapshot.

  • How much disk space is required to take those snapshots?

Theoretically, MagiCure takes only 0.07% to the total hard disk space to create all those snapshots. That is the least amount of disk space required to protect the entire system, as compared with any other software ever produced. However, because each snapshot can contain a different amount of user data; the actual sizes of individual snapshots may differ.

  • Does MagiCure prevent hardware failure?

No. MagiCure is a software solution that manages all the information on the local hard disk. No external media is required to run MagiCure. Therefore, in case of hardware failure, MagiCure will not able to run.

  • Is MagiCure a replacement for backup software?

No, MagiCure is not a substitute for backup software. Most backup applications copy the backup information to external media (such as tape or network server). MagiCure does not require any external media to operate. It can protect and fix your computer problems locally on the hard drive. Therefore, MagiCure is not operable if hardware failure occurs. We encourage you to backup all of your important data to external media.

  • What operating systems does MagiCure support?

MagiCure supports Microsoft Windows 98, ME, 2000, NT 4.0, XP, Vista, and 7.

  • What file systems does MagiCure support?

MagiCure supports FAT16, FAT32, and NTFS file systems. However, NTFS file system compression is not currently supported.
